Paying for Homecare
Homecare services typically come at a cost. The amount you pay depends on various factors, including your income and savings.
How to Access Homecare
If you're struggling with daily tasks like cooking or dressing, consider requesting a care needs assessment from your local council. This assessment determines the support you need to maintain independence at home. Your carer, GP, or district nurse can assist with referral for assessment.
For individuals leaving hospital, homecare services can be organised by ward staff to ensure a safe transition home or aid in rehabilitation. Planning for future care and support is typically led by a social worker.
Will the Local Council Cover Homecare Costs?
After a care needs assessment, your local council may determine your eligibility for homecare support and conduct a means test based on your income and savings. Unlike care home considerations, property value usually isn't factored into this assessment.
The means test evaluates your income and savings to determine your contribution towards care costs. Specific income and capital, such as certain disability benefits and pensions, may be exempt. Financial assistance is available based on your financial situation.
If eligible for financial support, your local council can coordinate homecare services, or you may opt for direct payments to arrange care independently.

Your capital | What you will have to pay |
Over £23,250 |
You have to pay your own fees as a 'self-funder'. |
Between £14,250 and £23,250 |
You qualify for financial support from the council and pay a contribution from your income – such as pensions – plus a 'tariff income' based on your capital. This 'tariff income' is worked out by assuming you have an extra £1 per week in income for every £250 (or part of) you have between £14,250 and £23,250 in capital. |
Less than £14,250 |
The council provides financial support and you will still contribute from your income, but you won't have to pay a tariff income. |
Costs of Self-funded Homecare
Self-funding individuals can arrange their own care or request assistance from the local council, provided they meet care needs criteria. Homecare rates may vary based on location and required care level. Consider reaching out to multiple homecare agencies to compare costs and services tailored to your needs.
